Oberon has been missing for several years, and his brood, presuming him dead, has bickered for the throne. First Bleys, Brand, and Fiona formed a cabal to try and take the throne, to be stopped by Caine, Eric, and Julian. Then Corwin appeared from nowhere and joined Bleys for another play at the throne, also failing.

The Church of the Unicorn has refused to recognize the legitimacy of Eric's reign. A band calling themselves the League of the Silver Rose, believed to be made up of Corwin sympathizers, has began trying to undermine events in the kingdom. Dark cults lurk in backrooms, and slashers stalk back alleys.
