It’s been almost two weeks since I last updated. Yowzers. My usual venues for screwing around have dwindled up, so I haven’t had much time to update this. If I’ve had time for writing, I’ve tried to use it for writing. So I got that going for me.
I’ve felt like I haven’t gotten a whole lot of writing done recently. My weekends have been overwhelmed by errands, which has been kind of a bummer. I’ve done two weekends of getting up at O-Dark-Thirty, and I’m finding that I normally rely on my weekends to catch up on my sleep. So I’ve been absolutely fricking exhausted.
But, I’ve banged out a couple things from my to-do list. I finished my rewrite of “It’s All Fun and Games” and gotten feedback on it. My girlfriend is a bit mad about the ending, but I think it’s much stronger. I’ve also finished the flash fiction and am getting feedback on it.
I haven’t finished a re-work on “With Fans Like These.” I’ve got a week to get it re-done and I’m just not sure what to do. More than anything I’m feeling daunted by it and avoiding it, which doesn’t really solve anything. The girlfriend things I should just let the deadline pass, workshop it in July and then shop it around later.
I’ve got a couple paragraphs into my rock is dead story. Not entirely sure where I’m going with it, but I’m at least digging in on it.
The girlfriend has found a few new places for me to submit. There’s a zombie anthology that has submissions due at June 1st. She also found this venue for flash fiction that is now taking submissions for an anthology.
I recently got in touch with an old friend that I haven’t really heard from in years. The friend in question, who is a very sweet and gentle person, asked what I’d been writing. I was about to send her links to my stories, when I realized: I write weird stuff. Not all of it is dark, but it’s mostly a little weird. Which is funny, because I don’t think of myself as dark.
So I sent her a link to “A Tale of Two Bureaucracies,” since it’s at least funny.
I’ve been thinking more and more about the stories that have reverted back to me, and wondering what to do with them. One thing I’ve been mulling around is the idea of something like Examiner or Associated Content, but geared towards fiction. I’ve heard some negatives about sites like that, and self publishing has its problems, but these have already seen print and they are hard to market. Very few places take previously published pieces and they usually pay bupkiss. But if I can have a few stories out there picking up loose change from page hits and keeping my name out there, that could be valuable.
